Denver Metroplex assessment released by aviation officials

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently made a draft of an environmental assessment report available to the public. The report discusses the project the FAA proposes for the Denver Metroplex.

The FAA defines a metroplex as a metropolitan area that has a number of airports, and where air traffic flows in complex patterns. The Denver Metroplex includes Denver International Airport, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport, Greeley-Weld County Airport, and Centennial Airport.

The FAA is proposing to make changes to the procedures used by air traffic controllers handling arrivals and departures within the metroplex. The agency also wants to increase the use of technology, including GPS systems, that will enable aircraft to fly routes that are more efficient.

In their assessment, the FAA listed five airports within the metroplex it wants to study. Denver International has been designated as the focus of the major study, while additional studies will be done at Centennial Airport, Greeley-Weld County Airport, Northern Colorado Regional Airport, and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.

The FAA is hosting a workshop to discuss the project at Centennial's Public Works Facility, 7272 South Eagle Street. The meeting runs from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 7. Additional workshops will be held throughout the area in the future. Officials might use flyer printing to create handouts for the meetings, since the subject is a complex one.
