Centennial Youth Commission wins award

Arapahoe/Douglas Works! recently awarded the Leading by Example award to the Centennial Youth Commission for its work at a job fair.

In 2016, commission members held a fair for young people interested in finding work. There were 95 area youngsters looking for work from the 19 employers who attended, and 51% of them were hired.

The City of Centennial Youth Commission, which was created in July 2003 by the City Council, is made up of 11 members aged 13 to 18. It is their function to advise the city council on issues that matter to the city's young people. They meet twice a month and take part in various citywide events, perform community service, and develop programs for the community. In addition, the commission manages the Mayor's Youth Corps, a group of volunteers who help to implement the commission's ideas.

For its part, Arapahoe/Douglas Works! is one of a network of workforce centers throughout the state that provide jobseekers and businesses with various services at no cost to them. The centers work with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, and are a resource to connect Colorado businesses with people who want to work with them. The centers offer such resources as workshops, counseling, and training.
