Centennial Park has a pair of new attractions, in the form of ‘Little Free Libraries’.
These libraries are actually miniature models of schools that have children's Books inside. They are public book exchanges, where people can choose to borrow free Books in the library and leave those they have already read. The miniature libraries were dedicated April 9.
The libraries are in deKoevend Park on University Boulevard, and Willow Creek Park on East Mineral Drive. The effort to open these facilities was a joint partnership between South Suburban Parks and Recreation and the Rotary Club of Centennial. Ken Hope, a Rotarian, said South Suburban had been very helpful to the Rotary Club.
Hope built the Little Free Libraries by hand. The structures are mounted on wooden posts, and have clear magnetized doors to protect the Books. The Rotarians stock the libraries and encourage members of the community to browse, select a book, and donate one in return.
Jessica Reagan, a member of the Centennial Rotary Club and member of the Little Free Library Committee, said promoting literacy is the point of having the libraries. Thus far, response has been positive, with Englewood resident Wendi Palmer noting she liked the fact the libraries are in the parks, and not hidden away.
The Rotary could work with a postcard printing company to create cards for Mailing to announce the libraries to Centennial residents.
