Centennial residents are encouraged to join friends and family for an upcoming walk to raise awareness of mental health issues.
The walk is sponsored by the National Alliance for Mental Illness Arapahoe/Douglas Counties and will take place in the popular Centennial Center Park. Participants may walk with NAMI, or put together their own team to raise funds.
NAMI Arapahoe/Douglas Counties is a local affiliate of the national organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The organization has taken as its mission providing support, education, and advocacy for people who are dealing with mental illness. NAMI supports both individuals and families in achieving their goals of regaining mental health.
More than 15 million Americans live with mental illness, which impacts both them and their families. NAMI has more than 1,000 local affiliates like the one in Arapahoe/Douglas counties, as well as thousands of volunteers who work to provide support and education, fight against the stigma often attached to such illnesses, and advocate on behalf of those suffering from mental illness for health insurance, rehabilitation, jobs, and housing.
The walk starts at 10:00 am on May 21. Centennial Center Park is on East Peakview Avenue in Centennial. Event organizers might consider working with a newsletter printing company to create a letter to hand out to walk participants, explaining the misconceptions about mental illness and presenting facts instead.
