Centennial lights up for the holidays

The holiday season got off to a bright start in Centennial, when Cathy Noon, the city's mayor, threw the switch to light Centennial's holiday tree.

The ceremony took place on November 22 at Centennial Center Park, and was presided over by none other than Santa Claus himself. This is the third year for the event, which is an annual celebration. More 500 people came to the park, which is the main attraction of the city's park system, to enjoy treats such as hot chocolate while they listened to traditional Christmas carols.

Music was provided by choral groups from four schools: Peakview Elementary, Homestead Elementary, Carl Sandburg Elementary, and Newton Middle School. The young singers performed both traditional and contemporary carols to entertain the listeners.

The evening was one of the warmest on record for the event, but the hot chocolate and other goodies will no doubt have been welcome anyway. The event was free, and people were given the chance to talk to Santa, and have their photo taken with him.

Centennial officials could consider making next year's celebration even more fun by working with a banner printing company to create colorful holiday Banners for outdoor use. Banners are sturdy and can be reused many times. Since they move in the wind, this can help to create an intriguing.
