Centennial course planned for small-scale growers

An upcoming workshop series may be of interest to Centennial horticulturalists who are working with limited space.

A course offered through a hybrid of online and hands-on learning is scheduled to begin in early January, and is being made available thanks to a partnership between Colorado State University Extension and Denver Botanic Gardens. It will be focused on properties that are five acres or smaller, and it will cover topics ranging from cultivar and seed selection to soil prep, planting, and even how to market the crop.

The classes will run from January to August, and the lecture events will include dinner. There will also be six farm-hosted hands-on workshops. Everyone will be able to choose three electives that will offer a deeper dive into a particular topic, and the choices for these include seed saving, ways to extend the growing season, and other topics.

As more people become concerned about sustainability, small-scale agriculture is taking on a more significant role. A printer will be able to prepare everything from promotional Pens for the learners to customized certificates of completion that feature a special graphic design.

The start date for the Beginning Farmers Core Curriculum and Hands-On Workshops will be January 11, and it will wrap up on August 26. The venue for the in-person sessions will be provided at a later date.
