Centennial Airport wins national award

Three airports in Colorado won national awards for excellence for their work this past winter, with Centennial Airport among them.

Centennial Airport, Aspen Pitkin County Airport, and Denver International Airport were honored during the International Aviation Snow Symposium, held last month in Buffalo, New York.

The criteria for the awards include personnel training, readiness of equipment, timely communication, plans for the control of snow and ice, storm cleanup, overall safety awareness, and the effectiveness of control plans for handling ice and snow on runways and elsewhere.

Centennial Airport won in the category of large general aviation fields. Centennial handles more than 300,000 flight operations every year, making it the country's second-busiest airport of its type. It has also won the Balchen/Post award 14 times, more than any other airport in the award's history.

Centennial Airport plows its runways between landings and take-offs, rather than shutting them down. It recently installed a vehicle tracking system that uses GPS to keep track of its equipment operators, making them safer.

The assistant airport director, Lorie Hinton, said this last winter was “particularly challenging” for the field, since the snowfall was heavier than usual. She credits the operations and maintenance personnel for keeping the field open, and allowing it to win the award.

Airport officials might consider creating Calendars with shots of operations to use as promotional items.
