The City of Centennial recently announced it is now accepting applications from those who would like to join the Youth Commission.
The Centennial Youth Commission serves as an Advisory Board to the Centennial City Council and works to bring the concerns of young people to the attention of the city. It also seeks to demonstrate the contributions younger citizens make to the community, and at the same time, encourage them to get involved in civic issues.
The city council first formed the Centennial Youth Commission in July of 2003, to give younger residents a voice in their own government. The commission is comprised of eleven members, ages 13 to 18, who are residents of Centennial. The group undertakes community service efforts, creates initiatives for the community, and takes part in municipal events. Among other matters, the commission has partnered with the Centennial Municipal Court to create a Teen Court, run entirely by young people, including juries. This type of court has proven successful in reducing repeat offenses.
Each member serves a two-year term, and the commission meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Thursday. The meetings are held at the Centennial Civic Center on Arapahoe Road, and run from 7.00 pm until 9.00 pm. Officials can use brochure printing to create Booklets describing commissions.
Applications to join the commission can be found on the city's website, and must be returned by March 18, at 5.00 pm.
