Santa Ana park to celebrate the Bard

The long-running ‘Shakespeare by the Sea’ program is coming to Santa Ana this summer with its production of Othello. Residents will be treated to a first class performance as they lay out underneath the stars.

The Shakespeare by the Sea program is a nonprofit run with the sole purpose of bringing the Bard free of charge to people in the area every summer. The group works with local city organizations to put up the events. What began with a few shows back in 1998 has now grown into a 10-week summer program that stretches from Hermosa Beach to Whittier. Though a few of the larger population centers will get multiple performances, the tragedy of Othello is the only show coming to Santa Ana.

The Flyers promise a thriller that is emotionally gripping and heartbreaking. The play features Philip C. Curry in the title role, Patrick Vest as the treacherous Iago, and Melissa Booey as Desdemona. The show is being produced by Lisa Coffi and directed by Stephanie Coltrin.

Othello will be performed on July 28 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Birch Park, located at 210 N. Birch St. Admission is free to the public, but donations are welcome. Since the performance is in a park, playgoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair. Anyone interested in more information should contact the city or visit the website.
