This year marks the 56th Annual International Surf Festival, and it is Redondo Beach’s turn to host.
Prior to 1962, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach each held their own festival, but since then the three cities have held The International Surf Festival as a joint effort in conjunction with their Chambers of Commerce and the County of Los Angeles.
Annual events, although widely anticipated, still need promotion and a banner printing service is often employed for this.
The King Harbor Youth Sailing Event is due to start of the festival at 5:30 pm today, after which a wide range of activities fill the rest of the annual event, which runs through August 5.
Wholly Guacamole will be bringing Guaclandia to the festival with its bottomless free guacamole, interactive avocado installations, and pop art-style avocado wall. Guaclandia will be open August 3 & 4 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and August 5 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Initially, the International Surf Festival was funded by the cities and organizations involved, along with help from Los Angeles County and without the aid of commercial sponsorship. The festival has progressed over the years and now has a variety of high profile sponsors such as Toyota, Beachsport.org, and Michelob Ultra.
The three main events to look for are the Lifeguard Medley Relay, the 6-Man Volleyball Tournament, and the Pier-to-Pier Swim. Other events include the beach run, paddleboard races, and bodysurfing contests.
