Oaklavai, the Oakland's Open Street Initiative, is holding Love our Neighborhood Day this May. It is hosted by Walk Oakland Bike Oakland.
The aim of the event is to close off several streets to vehicular traffic and open them up to pedestrians and bicycle riders so they can enjoy their neighborhood. It is set to take place from North Oakland to San Pablo Avenue.
Food trucks will be present, artists and crafters will display their works, and street performers will entertain the crowds. In addition, several community groups will be on hand to provide information about the services they provide to residents, and will be handing out freebies. As in other years, dancing on the streets is likely to be part of the celebration.
Applications are still being accepted for groups and individuals who will provide entertainment or activities during the day.
Oaklavia consists of three annual events held in Oakland. This includes Love on Lake Day on September 20 and Berkeley Sunday Streets on October 18. The events are presented by such local groups as the San Pablo and Golden Gate Improvement Association, the Downtown Berkeley Association, and the North Shattuck Association.
Oakland Print companies may also participate in this event by helping provide promotional items to various community organizations.
