Oakland residents enjoy a climate conducive to year-round gardening, and the Piedmont Avenue branch of the city’s library system has scheduled an activity that may help point the way to growing vegetables successfully in the home garden.
UC Master Gardeners are subject matter experts when it comes to home horticulture, and they will share their skills and knowledge with attendees in the Planning Your Vegetable Garden session. Running for one hour in late January, it will address the essentials. The organizers note that they are pleased to be able to partner with the Master Gardeners program.
The presenter will discuss topics including successful seed starting and how to care for young plants until they are ready for transplanting. Building a healthy soil is on the agenda, and everyone will learn how to choose the right plants and cultivars for their particular property. Watering, feeding the growing plants, and pest control will wrap up the session.
A workshop gives the public the chance to learn some new skills, and they often prove to be popular. Stationery printers can prepare handouts such as gardening cheat sheets for distribution during an activity.
Planning Your Vegetable Garden is set to welcome both newbie and expert green thumbs on Saturday, January 25. It will begin at 2:00 pm at 80 Echo Avenue.
