Young whale found in Newport Beach harbor

The Harbor of Newport Beach remains the home of a juvenile gray whale who has become rather well-known along the coastline of Southern California.

The whale, who is about 20 feet long, was originally seen in Dana Point Harbor on Tuesday, August 8, where it remained for seven hours, prompting a group of standup paddleboarders and the Harbor Patrol to lead it in a lap around the harbor in efforts to make it leave. The undeterred whale reappeared two days later inside of Newport Harbor, near a popular fishing and whale-watch business. Later in the evening, it was found near Lido Island by boat captains.

The whale was spotted once again on Friday, August 11 by the Harbor Patrol of the Orange County Sheriff in Back Bay.

The person who runs the Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project of the American Cetacean Society Project for the Los Angeles Chapter is Alisa Schulman-Janiger. She commented that the area is one with few harbor boats.

Although some people think the whale may be lost or in distress, Schulman-Janiger said that the whale is fully grown and is just curious about the waters.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create pieces that can be displayed around harbor urging people to give any unexpected wildlife the time and space needed to explore.
