Newport Beach sponsors bike safety month

During the month of June, focused Bike and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operations will be conducted by the Newport Beach Police Department.

On certain days of the month, there will be extra officers on duty patrolling areas where pedestrians and bicyclists are often found and where there have been many traffic collisions. The goal is to reduce injuries to all those involved.

Officers will be focusing on such offenses as making illegal turns, speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and failing to stop for Signs and signals, targeting pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers alike.

Bicycle riders should be wearing helmets, and, by law, those under the age of 18 are required to wear helmets. Bicyclists must follow the same laws regarding traffic that apply to motorists and will be issued citations if they fail to do so. Citations will also be given to drivers who do not share the road with cyclists and who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Pedestrians are reminded to cross the street at corners or in marked crosswalks and will also be given citations if they do not yield to drivers who have the right of way.

The Police Department might benefit from the use of Flyers that can be distributed to residents about the special enforcement operations this month to improve the rate of bicycle and pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the city.
