Later this week, a Laguna Niguel elementary school will be visited by famous marine artist Robert Wyland, who will take the opportunity to paint an aquatic-themed mural.
In a celebration of Malcom Elementary’s 20th anniversary, Wyland, with the help of some students, will be painting his piece on one of the school’s interior walls. The idea for inviting the artist came from Nona Reimer, a fifth-grade teacher at the school who has been with the school since its opening.
Wyland is known for his ‘100 Whaling Walls’. These large, outdoor murals filled with dolphins, sea otters, whales, and other marine life are found throughout the world. Similarly, the school has carried the marine theme throughout with its various building bearing names of the Channel Islands, a mariner for a mascot, and an assembly area known as “the harbor”. Wyland’s latest visit follows on from the artist’s ‘Clean Water Mobile Learning Experience’, which featured at the school last month.
Marine science brings up a variety of environmental issues that, with the assistance of brochure printers, can be brought to the public’s attention.
Wyland will be at the school this Wednesday, January 28, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am to paint the display. In total, 20 kids will be picked to help paint in half-hour shifts and throughout the day, any student who wants to participate will be allowed to paint.
