Special event at Chula Vista college

A college in Chula Vista has two reasons to celebrate, and has scheduled a double event.

Southwestern College is welcoming its new Superintendent and President, Dr. Mark Sanchez, and is also holding a Ribbon Cutting ceremony to open its new Performing Arts Center. Dr. Sanchez comes to Southwestern from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, where he is the assistant superintendent/vice president of Student Success and Support Programs. He has over 20 years’ experience in teaching, community college leadership, and workforce development.

Sanchez has implemented programs to ensure inclusion, diversity, and equality among employees and students. He strongly supports the concept of whole-person development, along with providing services that will help students reach their educational goals.

The other part of the event will officially open the college’s Performing Arts Center. The new facility is part of the Wellness & Aquatics Complex and covers 48,000 square feet. Tucker Sadler Architects designed the building, which is being constructed by Rudolph and Sletten, who also built the Math, Science, and Engineering Building. The center features new classrooms, a black box theater that seats 151, a lab for stage construction, an auditorium seating 500, and a new facility for performances and dance classes. Banner printing can be used to provide decorations for outdoor events like this.

The event takes place August 18, from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm. Attendees will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres. Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP by Wednesday, August 11.
