Chula Vista residents do not have to go to Spain this year for the traditional celebration of spring, as the California Yacht Club is holding its version of the event.
The Sevilla Festival, or Feria de Abril, is a massive celebration in the Spanish city of Seville, where thousands of people gather to celebrate the arrival of spring with dancing, singing, wine, and food.
The festival began modestly in the 1840s as a cattle fair, but by the 1920s had grown into the area's largest and most popular festival. Today, the festival is made up of more than 1,000 “casetas” or tents, which makes up its own “city” at the Parque de Maria Luisa in Barrio de la Remedios. Each day, the festival begins with a parade of horses and carriages and culminates in an extravagant fireworks display over the Guadalquivir River.
In Spain, the festival stretches for more than a week, usually two weeks after Semana Santa (Holy Week, or the week that ends with Easter). The Chula Vista version is scheduled for just one day.
Chula Vista residents will be treated to paella, the traditional Spanish dish made of rice and seafood, cooked freshly on site. There will also be colorful flamenco dancing and traditional Spanish music.
