As part of its ongoing composting program, the City of Chula Vista and Republic Services is offering free compost to the public.
Chula Vista residents are asked to bring their own shovels, buckets, containers, and tarps to get their rich compost, which they can then apply to their gardens and yards.
Chula Vista has a multi-pronged program designed to get more homeowners and residents composting, reducing waste by diverting organics like kitchen scraps and lawn clippings from the public landfills.
There are weekly composting workshops held every Sunday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Living Coast Discovery Center at 1000 Gunpowder Point Drive. Experts teach the different methods of backyard composting, why and how compost helps the soil, and how composting can save you water and money.
Residents who take the course are eligible to purchase their own backyard Soil Saver composter for the highly discounted price of $35. Organizers of courses such as these can get brochure printing done using local commercial printing services.
The Chula Vista Free Compost Event is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 between 8:00 am and noon at the Otay Landfill Customer Convenience Area at 1700 Maxwell Road. The free compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be available while supplies last.
This is one of three giveaways scheduled for 2020. The next one will be in November.
