Chula Vista area workshop to provide introduction to apiculture

This spring, a Chula Vista area workshop will give the public a chance to get to know honeybees a little bit better.

Wild Willow Farm has planned a two-day event that will introduce those who take part to honeybees and how they are cared for. This will include hands-on learning, and the second day will feature a visit to a working beehive.

The first day will provide an introduction to apiculture, and the participants will learn how to act around bees and also how to understand their behavior. There will be a discussion of honeybee society, the different types of hives and the tools that are used in beekeeping. This class, which is titled ‘Beginning Beekeeping’ is a prerequisite for ‘Intermediate Beekeeping’, which is scheduled for the next day.

The second day of the workshop will include a visit to the beehive to learn how to extract the comb and harvest the honey. A catalog printing service will be able to provide texts and other learning materials that can be used during this type of event.

This introduction to the apiary arts will be taking place on May 12 and 19, and it will be held at 2550 Sunset Avenue in San Diego. Wild Willow Farm & Education Center is an initiative of the San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project, and further details can be found on its website.
