Early years and growth
The first residents here were native people from southwest Arizona and parts of Colorado. Some time later, members of the Kumeyaay tribe arrived; the Kumeyaay still live in the area. Spanish explorers arrived in 1542, and the land where Chula Vista is located today was once part of the Rancho del Rey land grant, and the site of a number of orange groves. Those lands were developed by the San Diego Land and Town Company. The first house was built in 1887 and by 1889, there were ten houses still in existence today.
Much more recently, growth in Chula Vista can be tied to Rohr Aircraft, which moved to the city in 1941, largely ending its identity as an agricultural community. After the war, former Rohr workers, as well as servicemen returning from overseas, settled here, spurring population growth until by 2013, Chula Vista was one of the biggest cities in San Diego County.
