Special aircrafts winging in to Carlsbad

Carlsbad residents will soon have a chance to take to the sky in a once in a lifetime experience.

Wings of Freedom will be coming to the McClelland Palomar Airport. The event will feature World War II era aircrafts that are still flying today, including a B-24, a B-17, and a B-25.

Those who make the journey will be able to view the planes, and for those who wish to add a little something extra to their visit, there will even be an opportunity to enjoy a flight in one that lasts nearly half an hour. Brochures can be printed that give further details about the planes and pilots who flew them.

The event, which is hosted by the Collings Foundation, aims to educate the public about the war, and also to pay homage to those who never returned home from it.

The cost for a flight experience starts at $400 for a 25-minute flight in a B-25, and goes up to $400 for a 30-minute flight in either a B-17 or B-24. For those who would enjoy a chance to act as a pilot themselves, there is a dual-controlled P-51C Mustang available and they can receive flight instruction in the only plane of its type in the world. The money raised will be used to help maintain the aircrafts so that they will be able to continue to act as links to the past.
