What's Happening in Carlsbad, CA…

Popularity of local lagoon discussed in monthly meeting

During its meeting last month, the Carlsbad City County, the Carlsbad City Council discussed its lagoons and the city’s liability in the event of an accident at one of them.

Among Carlsbad’s local lagoons, only Agua Hedionda Lagoon permits recreational activity, and although its popularity reflects well on the city, it also brings up one or two issues for it to contend with. Currently, the city leases the right to use the lagoon to NRG Energy for the operation of its power plant on the lagoon’s extreme west side. Additionally, the city has an agreement to allow rentals of water sports equipment with California Watersports.

Furthermore, reports from residents in the lagoon area and city police indicate that dogs running off leash, swimming, and illegal parking are all regular occurrences.

According to Chris Hazeltine, director of the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation, the city’ local ‘secret lagoon’ is no longer a secret. It has been inundated with private businesses and individuals with whom Carlsbad has no agreement. Dogs walking, jet skiing, and paddle boarding (including paddle board yoga) are taking place.

Gathering support for or against an issue like limiting the use of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon can be accomplished with the help of a flyer printing service. Flyers can inform interested parties who can then meet to discuss the issue before presenting their concerns to authorities.
