What's Happening in Carlsbad, CA…

Carlsbad park increases environmental credentials

Alga Norte Community Park is now even greener thanks to the installation of a solar panel array in its parking lot.

Most of Carlsbad’s Alga Norte Community Park’s electrical needs will be filled by the new solar photovoltaic panels erected in the lot. The 720-panal solar array will take up two rows of parking places and provide much appreciated shade for park visitors.

Those periods when the panels do not generate adequate electricity for the parks need will be made up for by periods of more abundant sunshine, during which the extra electricity will be “banked” with San Diego Gas & Electric. The park can then draw on its electrical surplus as needed.

Solar panel instillation for the 32-acre park began in October of 2014 and cost $975,000. After its rebate from the state, the cost to the city was $720,000. Following the installation, testing took place up until January 19 before the panels were hooked up to the grid on January 30.

It is estimated that the solar array will have paid for itself in 11 years. Starting in its 12th year, the panels are expected to save Carlsbad taxpayers $66,000. The warranty period for the solar panels is 25 years, with a lifespan estimation of 30 years.
