American speed record set in Carlsbad 5000
This year, on March 30, Bernard Lagat came in second in Carlsbad 5000 race, but nevertheless set a record for an American with a time of 13 minutes and 19 seconds. This was five seconds faster than the time set by Mark Davis in 1996.
For the uninformed, the Carlsbad 5000 is an annual 5,000 meter or 5K foot race. First place in it went to Dejen Gebremeskel, an Ethiopian. This was Gebremeskel's fourth Carlsbad 5000 victory, and he finished in 13 minutes 13 seconds this time round.
Lagat and Gebremeskel are no strangers to each other, in fact, they both competed three weeks prior to the Carlsbad 5000 in Poland at the IAAF World Indoor Championship's 3K. In that race, it was Lagat that came out on top, winning the silver while Gebremeskel had to be content with the bronze.
This was 39-year-old Lagat's first 5K road race. A four-time Olympian with five American middle-distance records, Lagat came within 6 seconds of being the first American since Doug Padilla in 1990 to win the event.
Events like the Carlsbad 5000 attract visitors to a city and benefit local businesses, while also inspiring people in the community to either start or move their own fitness regimen into high gear. Entrepreneurs and print companies often come together to develop advertisements that can tie into an annual athletic event such as this one.
