Winter weather drive to warm homeless

During the month of November, the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless, based in Montgomery, is asking those in the community for donations of blankets.

For those who live in homeless shelters, blankets are important to keeping people warm, as are new and gently used hats, coats, and other outdoor wear for the winter.

According to the Executive Director of the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless, Molly Stone, this is an event carried out every year and it helps to meet the important needs of those who are homeless in the Montgomery area. Homeless individuals and families need a way to survive the winter, regardless of whether they are on the streets or in shelters, adds Stone, saying that once these basic needs are met, the organization can build relationships with these people so that further assistance can be offered.

The Montgomery Area Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. was incorporated in 2001 and two years later expanded to include its efforts to end homelessness in four more counties. When Autauga County was added in 2009, the organization was renamed the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless.

In order to collect these items, at the Festival Plaza and the Regions Bank, there will be large PODS storage containers both tomorrow and Saturday, November 21, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Banner printing may be used by the organization to inform the community of this need and where they can make their donations.
