WSFA.com reports thathe project was delayed slightly because the Salvation Army ran into a little difficulty while trying to sell their property, but that the bigger concern is that the organization will not have a place to operate from within the city. Lt. Tonya Farrington from the Salvation Army stated that:
“We are talking with all of the parties involved to come to an agreement because everybody wants the water park, including us, but we also want to be able to make sure we can provide for the community what we’ve been providing since we’ve been here.”
Farrington also said that she is confident a deal will be worked out before February.
The Whitewater Center will be built on 120 acres of land situated on the Alabama River’s banks. Construction costs for this project have been estimated at about $40m. One of its main features will be a whitewater course that can be used by casual enthusiasts and athletes alike. Graphic design is one way to illustrate what such a project would look like upon completion.
The ground-breaking ceremony is expected to be held sometime next summer.
