Officials for the state of Alabama are warning about a possible pine beetle infestation that could cause concern to anyone that relies on the forests for their livelihood.
The concern is not only restricted to logging companies, but professional landscapers, garden centers and anyone that works to keep Alabama looking its best.
The warning was reported to local media by experts at the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. The concern is due to the large number of dead and dying trees that were victims of drought conditions in 2016. The amount of sap produced by pine trees diminishes when they are unhealthy or not receiving the correct amount of water. The sap is a defense mechanism against pest invasion and when it is not at the proper level the trees are at risk.
Alabama is the second largest producer of pulp and paper in the United States and ranks 7th in lumber production. Landscapers can Print informative bulletins for their customers and community members to make them aware of the risk. Montgomery officials may consider taking the same steps and creating leaflets and Posters that explain how to identify the beetle. Removing damaged trees, clearing a space between infested trees and healthy forests and notifying local officials when beetles are spotted (especially on public lands) are all important steps.
The Alabama Forestry Commission has released information about its 2017 prevention programs to help curb the extent of any damage.
