A bill proposed in the Alabama Senate which would have made it illegal for local municipalities to ban plastic Bags failed to gain enough steam to come to a proper vote. The budget isolation resolution for this bill was unable to reach the three-fifths quorum required to pass.
The proposed measure was almost identical to a bill that the American Legislative Exchange Council drafted and passed in 12 other states.
The bill’s failure in the Alabama Senate was met with cheers from environmental groups. They stated that plastic bags make up a large proportion of the trash that is washing up on Alabama shores and choking up waterways. Casi Callaway, the director of a local organization which cleans up the Mobile Bay beaches, made it clear that her organization will continue to fight such bills.
Local governing councils are also opposed to the bill and are taking legislative measures against it. The towns of Montgomery, Huntsville, and Birmingham have already passed resolutions against the ban on banning plastic bags ,because they believe that such a bill promotes “unfair regulation.”
If a statewide ban on plastic Shopping Bags is enforced, shoppers will have to use reusable or biodegradable bags. Local grocery shops can show their support for environmentally-friendly options by selling reusable bags that have their store’s Logo Design on them.
