New marriage laws coming into effect

Alabama state is making changes to its marriage laws.

Changes to marriage laws were approved in the State Legislature's most recent session. People who wish to tie the knot in the state of Alabama will no longer need to get a marriage license however they will need to fill out a state-sponsored form, have it notarized and then return it to the Probate Judge’s Office. The Probate Judge will record that the couple is officially married however no license will be issued.

A marriage ceremony is no longer required. The notarized form is all of the proof that the applicants require to show that they are legally fit to marry and it must be returned to the Probate Judge’s Office less than 30 days after being signed. Counties and cities such as Montgomery will set their own fees.

Applicants must be of legal marriage age. That means 16 with parental consent and 18 without it. Blood tests, residency requirements and waiting periods are not mandated. All existing marriage licenses are valid until 28th August. After that, married couples are legally required to fill out the new form.

The new law also makes it so that people do not have to be married by someone licensed to perform a marriage ceremony. The signed form delivered to the Probate Judge within 30 days of the parties signing it is all that is required.

Couples who still wish to own and display traditional marriage certificates can still visit Print shops to have them printed and framed.

The new set of marriage laws go into effect on 29th August.
