A interchange on Interstate 85 recently opened east of Montgomery, marking a significant step in an outer loop that is planned to connect Interstate 85 with Interstate 65 south of Montgomery.
A special ceremony took place to open the new interchange that was attended by Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, and Governor Robert Bentley, as well as other local and state officials.
Also in attendance was Tony Harris, a spokesman from the Alabama Department of Transportation, who said the cost for the interchange was $150m and work on it had started in the 1900s. The long-term goal is to create a better route between the port of Mobile and the East Coast, which means a new connector between interstates in Montgomery.
Harris added that the next phase of construction has not yet been determined, as it is contingent on available funding.
According to Representative Reed Ingram, the mayor of Montgomery from 1977 to 1999, Emory Folmar advocated for the loop early in his career as mayor. Now it is up to Congress to continue providing funds for the rest of the loop.
A local Print company may be used to print mailers about the loop that can be sent out to those in the area, helping them to become informed of its benefits and advocating for it to representatives in Congress.Get a Free Quote for Print
