Hundreds of people sent in applications to the council, and the chosen few were selected by a committee made up of MYPC alumni through a process that looks for diverse backgrounds and strong desires to improve the standard of living in Montgomery. The applicants who were unsuccessful may still be offered other roles in the city’s governance.
The MYPC members are aged between 18 and 35, and all are working and living in Montgomery. Documents featuring official Letterheads are often used to make big announcements like this.
The Mayor went on to say:
“Young leaders have always been the catalysts for transformation and growth- not only in Montgomery but throughout the world. I look forward to working firsthand with every member of the Council and seeing the fruits of their labor for years to come.”
Councilmembers serve for two years, in which time they will have one meeting with Mayor Reed per month. These meetings will be for them to discuss ideas and ways for the young people in Montgomery to make the city a more enjoyable area to live in. They will also present the Mayor with potential solutions to a variety of issues the city is dealing with.
