MGM completes runway rehabilitation

A project to rehabilitate the main taxiway at Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) has been completed.

The entire $1.2 million project included working on the drainage, paving, milling, lighting and painting of a section of the 9,000ft stretch of taxiway. Most of the money to fund the rehabilitation project was available thanks to a grant that came from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.

Marshal J. Taggart, Jr. who serves as the airport’s executive director, said that the entire project was completed on time and within the budget. He also said:

“The Airport Authority has an ambitious vision for this airport. Years of long-term planning have been undertaken to guide MGM’s development. This represents another investment into the vitality of our airport and our region.”

The volume of air traffic flowing through MGM slowed down when lockdown started. According to Taggart, the airport was enjoying 14 percent more traffic when compared to the previous year. The numbers dropped after 18th March, but May’s and April’s numbers showed a steady climb. Most planes feature airline logo designs on their tails.

The airport is currently running flights to Dallas, Charlotte and Atlanta. On 1st July, MGM will add one more daily flight to Dallas and another to Atlanta. On 1st August, same-day services to Charlotte and Washington D.C will resume.

MGM is planning to make more improvements. The management is hoping to get feedback from the community before starting on other projects that will improve the baggage carousels, build a new hotel, and provide a facility for rental cars.
