First Annual Alabama "geek" convention takes place in August

The Gump City Con is a family-friendly pop culture expo to which everyone is invited next month.

The Alcazar Shrine Temple on East Boulevard is the setting for this new local comic event, and scheduled for the day are gaming tables, question and answer panels, and cosplay contests. Special guests include anime voice actors, writers and zombie extras from the popular series The Walking Dead. Exhibits include the Jeep from Jurassic Park and the Delorean Back to the Future. A concert by local alternative rockers Pink for President will close out the day.

The hall is already fully booked so any vendors hoping to apply will only be able to put their names on a waiting list. It is not too early to make plans for next year's event, to consider sponsoring the conference, or to find ways to become involved in the convention this yea, such as passing out sci-fi and other related Promotional Products.

The Expo is scheduled for August 12 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM at 555 Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Attendees should bring a form of ID for advance purchases because pre-Mailing of tickets is not available.

Tickets are $5 for children ages 6-11; $18 for seniors, military members, and first responders; and $25 for everyone else. VIP tickets that enable early access to the event and include a SWAG bag and a free meal are $75. Children under the age of six are admitted free of charge.
