Best BBQ competition heats up as finalists named

The votes are in for the River Region of Alabama in the quest for Alabama’s Best Barbeque Ribs held by Al.com, and the three finalists have been announced for the Montgomery area.

First place goes to Fat Boy's Bar-B-Que Ranch located in downtown Prattville. The ranch specializes in a variety of slow-cooked meats, barbeque sauces made from scratch, and homemade side dishes.

In second is Jim N’ Nick’s, a chain with many locations around the country but which started in 1985 in downtown Birmingham. Since then, people from across Alabama have frequented the restaurant and praised its food and eateries around the state.

The wild card winner is Jim’s Highway 82 BBQ in Billingsley. The restaurant has been in business since 1975 and has earned a reputation for serving up hand-pulled barbeque and ribs.

The competition began at the end of August with readers placing their nominations by Labor Day. There were five polls around the state and the finalists were the top two in each poll, plus one wildcard selected by the staff of the publication.

On Monday, September 15, the final voting began with visits to the 15 finalists around the state by one of the staff writers and a separate poll for readers. Alabama’s Best BBQ Ribs will be announced on September 24, with poster printing being an excellent medium for getting the word out about the winner.
