The Darling Buds are due to make an appearance in Newport in mid-May.
This indie cult band from nearby Caerleon take their name from the novel by H. E. Bates. They got together in 1986 and were heavily influenced by the Beatles memorable early tunes, creating short hook-orientated melodic sounds.
Their initial impact was as a feature of the brief “blondie” movement, which featured groups fronted by a blonde lead singer with all members wearing black. The band was integral to the so-called C86 scene that included the likes of The Primitives and The Shop Assistants.
The band, led by Andrea Lewis released several catchy indie-pop tracks, including, "If I Said", "Burst" and "Hit the Ground" which made the top 30 in 1988. There were also three albums on the Epic label, "Pop Said" (1988), "Crawdaddy" (1990) and "Erotica" (1992).
They broke up in the 1990s, with Lewis leaving to pursue a media career. Other members, at various times, included Christopher McDonagh (bass), Harley Farr (guitar), Blos (drums from 1986-1990) and James Hughes (drums from 1990-1993).
Tickets cost £8.80, inclusive of booking fee, and entry is limited to 16 years of age and over. Banner printing can be a useful way of drawing public attention to a forthcoming musical event in the local community.
The Darling Buds gig will start at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 15 at Le Public Space, Newport.
