Big Mac's Wholly Soul Band, presented by Global Promotions, is due to play a gig in its home city at the beginning of April.
The band was formed as a house group in 1990 at the Hollywood Club in Newport. This happened within a few months of the release of the successful film 'The Commitments', about a similar fictional group playing ‘60s soul music. Due to the amount of work to be had in the pubs, clubs and dining establishments of South Wales, Big Mac's were soon asked to support the actual Commitments at a series of venues across the country.
The band has played right across the UK, including at The Marquee Club, The Dorchester, The Cafe Royal, The Rock Garden, and the ICC. They subsequently toured overseas to places as far apart as Vienna, Tenerife, Cairo, and Dublin.
The band has also supported artists such as Billy Ocean, Van Morrison, Sister Sledge, Jools Holland, Gabrielle, and Ruby Turner. It consists of 12 members led by Mike McNamara, who delivers classic Stax Records and Tamla Motown tracks.
