Newport set for arrival of hillbilly rockers

The American rock outfit Hayseed Dixie are on tour in the UK and due to play a gig in Newport towards the end of October.

They hail from East Tennessee and formed in the summer of 2000. The line-up includes frontman John Wheeler (also known as Barley Scotch), guitarist and mandolinist Hippy Joe Hymas, with Tim Carter on banjo and Jake ‘Bakesnake’ Byers on bass guitar.

The band started their career by reworking 10 iconic AC/DC tracks in their own distinctive mountain style. This eventually became Hayseed Dixie's debut album which, naturally, was titled ‘A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC’.

The album was released April 17, 2001 and impressively sold over 150,000 Copies in its first year. On the back of this initial success, the band decided to hit the road and played a series of live shows.

Since 2001, Hayseed Dixie has released a total of 16 studio albums, a Halloween EP, as well as a live double-sided album recorded in Glasgow. Their latest record ‘Blast From The Grassed’ was released in 2021, with many fans calling it some of their best work.

The Guardian gave them a five-star review, commenting:

"The Hayseed's berserk hedonism is indeed refreshing."

Tickets cost £20.75 including a booking fee. Print shops can be a useful resource when preparing for a concert or musical event that’s coming to your area.

Hayseed Dixie's gig has a starting time of 7.30pm on Sunday 23 October at The Neon, Newport.
