What's Happening in Warrington, England…

Teenager praises Warrington careers service

A teenager from Great Sankey has heaped praise on his local authority’s career initiative after winning the top prize in its latest competition.

Waqar Quayyum, 19, picked up an Apple iPad Mini from the National Apprenticeship Service before going on to express his appreciation for the help he has been given with his own professional journey.

Mr Quayyum was provided with guidance to help him move forward after completing a course in electric installation. Along with around 180 other people, he also participated in summer events around Warrington to drum up interest in apprenticeships.

Colin Froggart, a councillor who works closely with young people in the area, said:

“The careers for young people service can advise young people on their next steps, give help with applying for jobs or writing CVs, and can give guidance about training and education courses in the area.”

In order to promote the benefits of apprenticeships, the careers service will no doubt make use of firms providing full colour printing in Warrington. Eye-catching posters, for example, can be used to raise awareness effectively.

Apprentices are employed by companies so they can earn whilst learning, with businesses receiving help from the government to support the young workers. The minimum wage for apprentices has been set at £2.68 per hour with a typical week involving 30 hours on the job.

To qualify for an apprenticeship under the National Apprenticeship Service, an individual must live within England and cannot be attending an educational institution full-time.
