Outdoor stage hosts its first play
A newly-built outdoor stage at Priestley College in Warrington played host to its first production recently, as local students re-enacted a famous Greek tragedy.
Priestley College in Preston recently unveiled its new outdoor stage in style by hosting Medea – a traditional Greek tragedy which was staged by students at the college. Medea is a play first recorded as having being performed in 431BC and features a betrayal of Medea by her husband. The play is highly regarded amongst Greek scholars and was a very different type of production to the ones that might be expected of a college.
Adam Bird, a teacher at Priestley College, commented on the play, saying:

Plays hosted at colleges and schools often command large audiences as parents, friends and families attend to support the young actors. These are often high-quality productions, featuring polished performances and professional looking programmes that are created using local brochure printers.

“It was very unusual to hear a Greek tragedy being played out as you walked between classes.”

“In ancient Greek theatre you never had more than three actors on a stage at once and we have stuck to that, it has been interesting for them to learn about the history of another culture as well as the performance and it has been designed to stretch them.”
