Stockport Council has announced that it has begun the search for a design team for its project to turn two buildings in the town into a new creative campus.
The council is seeking to recruit an MEP engineer, contract administrator, cost consultant and architect to help realise this project, with the plan being for the architect to serve as its lead consultant. The first part of the project is to create a flexible space for performances and installations at Turner’s Vaults, a Grade II listed building in Stockport that has been lying empty for over six decades.
The second part of the campus would be at Market Place, with numbers 18 and 19 being converted into a sustainable innovation centre. The basement and lower floor would be a place for food and drinks, while workspaces will be built on the upper floor.
Once this creative campus has been completed, those organising performances and events there may want to use poster printing from Stockport shops to help promote them.
Financing for the scheme has come from the Cultural Development Fund set up by the Government, which awarded the council a grant of £2.63 million.
The space at Turner’s Vaults is set to measure 5,000 sq ft and have room for 500 seats. It will be used to host live shows, digital art displays and creative workshops.
