Popular panto to come to Stockport

Kites Theatre Group will be putting on a production of Dick Whittington on several dates at Stockport’s Compass Point this February, proving that the pantomime is not just for Christmas.

Originally formed as the North Stockport Girl Guides drama group, Kites Theatre Group has developed into a stand-alone group that gives Stockport youngsters the chance to try their hand in acting.

The organisers say:
“Kites is intended to give the children of Stockport a chance to take part in a theatrical production, to learn singing and dancing and to meet to rehearse without the cost of a subscription to a drama school.”

Events such as this pantomime can be publicised in the local community with flyer and poster printing campaigns.

Dick Whittington is one of Britain’s most popular pantomimes, and is based on a story from the 17th century. Dick, a poor boy from Gloucestershire, came to London because he thought the streets would be ‘paved with gold’. He soon had a different perspective of the capital when he became a scullion in the kitchen of Mr Fitzwarren, a rich merchant.

The start of his turn in fortunes came when he purchased a cat, which served to keep the rats out of his room. The boy’s cat, as audiences will discover, was to prove far more useful than being a mere rat-catcher.

Dick Whittington at the Compass Point in Stockport will run until this Saturday, 17th February. Tickets are priced at £4.50 and are available online.
