Cheadle is part of the Stockport Metropolitan Borough in Greater Manchester. A suburban town, Cheadle's historical location was in the county of Cheshire and many people still refer to it as Cheadle, Cheshire today. With a relatively small population, the town lies next to Manchester's East Didsbury, and, perhaps confusingly, Cheadle Hulme and Cheadle Heath in Stockport. It is thought that the Cheadle area was first inhabited in prehistoric times and there is also evidence of a Roman occupation. The name Cheadle is thought to have been derived from "Cedde", a Celtic word that means “wood".
