Vaughan woods to host silent retreat

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will be hosting a unique event this fall for those looking for an afternoon of peace and quiet in the Vaughan region.

The event, called “Naturally Mindful: Silent Retreat in Nature” is a five-hour getaway within some of Vaughan’s most picturesque green space. The day is set to commence with an arriving circle and guidelines being shared, after which attendees are encouraged to be silent and soak in the sounds of nature. There will be periodic guided events by facilitators, including a yoga class, sitting meditation, forest bathing, and walking meditation.

The goal, as explained by promotional material, is to allow attendees to attain peace of mind and achieve greater self-understanding:

“In this world of endless distractions and noise, many people find silent time in the forest- with guidance- to be refreshing and healing. It can also be discomforting, and ways to work with discomfort and our thoughts, and to access the support of nature will be shared.”

After the silent period, there will be a tea ceremony, during which attendees can share and reflect on their experience. The event is designed to welcome newcomers to yoga, meditation, and retreats like this. It will be hosted by the Kortright Centre for Conservation, and hosted by clinical psychologist and yoga teacher Ameeta Dudani. Events like this, often promoted through brochure printing and social media, aim to attract people to local nature while also promoting physical and mental health.

“Naturally Mindful: Silent Retreat in Nature” will take place on November 3 at the Kortright Centre for Conservation in Vaughan.
