Every November, Canadians remember the sacrifices made in war. This year, a special exhibition at Vaughan City Hall will help the area’s residents get in touch with this part of the past.
Named ‘Service and Sacrifice: Vaughan’s Contribution to Two World Wars’, the collection of displays will feature artifacts, documents, photographs, and other items from the historic events. Many people from the area made contributions to the war effort, either in battle overseas or on the home front.
Local hero Major MacKenzie will be one of those whose sacrifice will be recognized. During the First World War, he served in France with 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was wounded in 1916, and was decorated with the military cross for his efforts. He recovered, but was wounded again at Vimy Ridge, which is one of the best known Canadian battles of the war. Upon his return, he became a member of the town council, and eventually ended up serving in the Ontario legislature from 1945 until 1967.
Another person who will be recognized is John Thompson, who flew more than 100 missions over Germany in World War II.
Advertisements have been made to help promote the exhibit. The organizers of remembrance events often work with printing companies to generate public interest - poster printing and Flyers can be particularly effective.
The exhibition will take place in the Atrium gallery at Vaughan’s City Hall, which is located at 2141 Major MacKenzie Drive. Visitors are welcome between 8:30am and 8:00pm from Monday to Friday. The showcase will run until November 27.
