Vaughan names new chief of fire and rescue services

After more than three decades of helping to fight fires and keep the residents of Vaughan safe, Larry Bently has been named as the city’s new Chief of Fire and Rescue Services. For this veteran first responder, it would seem that firefighting is in his blood.

After having worked at a factory job for several years and having to deal with the uncertainty of strikes and layoffs, Mr Bentley wanted a job with more stability. In 1979, at the age of 25, he first donned his gear and joined his father at the fire station. His father was a long-time firefighter and was proud to have his son choose the same career.

As he rose through the ranks to eventually assume a supervisory role, he learned just how important it is for the crews under his supervision to have the proper training and equipment. It's a vital part of them being able to do their jobs as safely and effectively as they possibly can. There are so many different materials and chemicals in common use today, and all of them can produce smoke that is very toxic and deadly to anyone not wearing proper protection.

In his role as Chief, Mr Bently will supervise 256 operational firefighters, as well as 15 volunteers and support staff. Now the work starts for Mr Bently to make the job his own; this will involve the ordering of new department letterheads bearing his name, which will need to be ordered from a local stationery printing company.
