Vaughan gallery moves programming online
The McMichael Canadian Collection of Art has had to close its gallery space due to province-wide public health measures, but it has kept the art and education going through a series of virtual programs.
The online programming includes art classes running throughout January and February. Artist Andrew Cheddie Sookrah is offering an online painting studio class, with live demonstrations and tips on brushstrokes and other painting techniques. Another class is taught by Judy Sherman and deals with the craft of oil painting. Margaret Ferraro is leading an online introduction to pastels, a popular artistic medium. Each class requires registration, and instruction will take place over the online platform Zoom.
The McMichael’s lectures and tours are also moving online. The gallery’s speaker series will include a virtual presentation on colour and structure in the work of Franklin Carmichael, a member of Canada’s acclaimed Group of Seven. The collection has a heavy focus on this group, with over 2,000 artists in its gallery. All of the museum’s works in its permanent collection are also currently available online through the “e-Museum” section of its websites.
Galleries and museums often use websites alongside items like brochure printing and placards to provide contextual information on art and its history.
The McMichael Collection’s online programming is ongoing. The Franklin Carmichael talk will take place on February 1.
