Purple Day to mark finale of awareness month
The city of Vaughn has joined thousands of other Canadian cities in declaring March 26 ‘Purple Day’, marking the conclusion of epilepsy awareness month.
An official proclamation was issued from the mayor’s office in Vaughn to help bring attention to a health concern that is well supported in the Vaughn area by Epilepsy York Region (EYR), a charity based on the three pillars of advocacy, awareness, and education regarding seizure disorders.
Throughout March, the charity works to educate the public on the broad spectrum of seizure disorders, which includes epilepsy. As a not-for-profit agency based in the community, Epilepsy York Region offers programming and opportunities for those who are living with the disorder.
Since 1988, the EYR has served almost 15,000 people, advocating for better health care, government funding, job opportunities, and education. Health charities such as EYR use the services of local print companies to print education materials, flyers, brochures, and even annual reports to donors and supporters. Banner printing can also be used effectively to promote fundraising events.
Part of the agency's messaging is that positive change can be affected in the community and with more education and public awareness, the social stigma and public perceptions of epilepsy and seizure disorders can be reduced.
The EYR holds many fundraising events throughout the year, with volunteers attending health and wellness displays and organizing events for members.
Residents of Vaughn and the surrounding area are encouraged to wear purple on March 6 to support the initiative.
