Portage event to cross Toronto

Residents of Vaughan may be interested in a returning Toronto-area athletic event, which will see “historian athletes and voyageur philosophers” haul canoes across the city on their shoulders.

The event has been named “Davenportage”, a play on the term “portage”, which describes the process of transporting a canoe or other boat over land. The route for the event was designed after the portage trails used by Indigenous peoples in the area.

The walk is taking place to re-connect urban dwellers with the land, as well as raising awareness of revitalization of the Don River Valley. The event will not be timed, meaning that each participant is walking for the challenge of completing the difficult trek. Participants will use bike paths to travel across the city.

The event has been running since 2014 and has faced challenging weather conditions in the past. This year’s Davenportage will include an optional 15-kilometre run and 18-kilometre canoe journey to the start of the trail as a warmup, before the 17-kilometre portage route from the Don River to the Humber. Participants are also encouraged to carry objects of historical significance or food to donate to the Yorkville Fire Station.

Athletic events like this, often advertised through tools like banner printing, are popular as a way for individuals to challenge themselves and stretch their horizons.

The 2020 edition of Davenportage will take place on November 1, kicking off at Etienne Brule Park.
