New hospital completed in Vaughan
The long-awaited Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital has finished completion, meaning that the growing city of Vaughan will now have its own full-service medical centre.
The new hospital is an 11-storey building that will employ thousands of staff and hundreds of pieces of equipment. The building is a “smart hospital”, where devices are linked together with the goal of making patients’ medical records easily accessible to doctors at every step of their stay and allowing consistent communication between health practitioners.
The hospital also uses a state-of-the-art ventilation system, which could help with treatment of COVID-19 and other infectious transitions. Other features include individual treatment cubicles and an emergency room offloading bay designed to provide patient privacy.
The hospital has been a long time in the making, being originally proposed back in 2003. A land deal signed in 2015 allowed building to begin. Cortellucci Vaughan will take pressure off the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, which has previously serviced Vaughan, and will reduce wait times.
Mackenzie Health played a part in securing the land for the hospital, and it is currently involved in recruiting and training thousands of staff members. Hiring processes such as this are usually quite extensive, often beginning with the exchange of business cards and ending in a detailed on-boarding stage.
The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will open for patients in early 2021. It is the first new hospital to be built in Ontario in more than 30 years.
