Festival to highlight puppetry and animation

A Vaughan area festival that showcases the crafts of animation and puppetry will be taking place virtually this year, aiming to bring the same creativity to the digital space.

The Bridges Festival was launched by Crane Creations last year with a physical event held in Mississauga, but it was only able to hold two shows and an exhibition before social distancing orders forced cancellation. This year, the festival is looking to offer a greater example of what it can offer.

This year’s events include performances of Old Man and the River, an acclaimed wordless puppet play about an elderly man who encounters a mysterious creature, along with screenings of animated short films from around the world. The festival’s entertainment has been designed to appeal to audiences across the Greater Toronto Area, including Vaughan and Richmond Hill.

An animation-focused panel will include discussion with Kenia Mattis of ListenMi Animation Studio, Gary Thomas of Animate Projects and Myfanwy Ashmore of the Toronto Animated Image Society.

There will also be a series of online networking events for professionals in the animation and puppetry fields. Conventions and festivals offer professionals in artistic fields a great opportunity to make connections, typically through the trading of Business Cards and industry stories.

The 2021 edition of the Bridges Festival will take place online between March 13 and March 15.
